Sygate positioned in "Leaders" Quadrant in Personal Firewall Magic Quadrant 1H05

Vision and Execution Key Factors for Vendor Selection.

FREMONT, Calif.-May 18, 2005 -

Sygate Technologies, the leading provider of Network Access Control (NAC) solutions, has been positioned in the "Leaders" quadrant of Gartner's Personal Firewall Magic Quadrant for the first half of 2005. Described by Gartner as the "first line of defense", personal firewalls ".bring network intrusion detection/prevention and firewall functions to individual workstations, providing a first line of defense at the device level. Personal firewalls are needed because PCs increasingly require local defense of their network services and applications." According to Gartner, Leaders are performing well today, have a clear vision of market direction and are actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market.

In analyzing 12 companies for the report, Gartner positioned them according to general categories of "completeness of vision" and "ability to execute." Specific execution criteria included interoperability with different enterprise management systems, value-added partnerships and alliances with products in related security markets and overall share of the personal firewall market. Vision criteria included policy enforcement, intrusion prevention and on-demand strategy (for unmanaged system security). "A company needs a strong response in all of these areas to be considered for a leader ranking," the report stated.

Gartner described the market for personal firewalls, which block attacks against individual workstations and mobile devices, as "viable for best-of-breed products." It predicted the following personal firewall adoption rates for enterprises:

"By 2006, 90 percent of managed corporate laptops will be equipped with personal firewalls. By 2006, 30 percent of network-connected desktops in organizations with more than 1,000 employees will be equipped with personal firewall functionality, rising to 60 percent by 2008 and 95 percent by 2010."

Among "Five Emerging Topics [That] Will Influence the PFW (Personal Firewall) Market in 2005," Gartner listed On-Demand Security, stating: "Users increasingly want remote access from unmanaged systems for which a full PFW cannot be installed or assumed to be working."

"In a fiercely competitive market for computer security, Sygate has been positioned in the leaders quadrant," said John De Santis, Sygate CEO. "We believe this is a testament to the vision and resourcefulness of all Sygate employees and I am honored to lead them."
